About Green card

In Sweden our NGO for vocational agricultural training the Swedish Vocational Board of Agriculture and Holticulture has introduced Green card which is supposed to function as a kind of driving license for people in the business of dairy cows, pig breeding, crop-production and horticulture production. This project is still in an early stage but may well serve as a good example of how one could use a card like this. In Sweden you can register for a Green card examination when you either have finished an Agricultural or Horticultural College (upper secondary school) or if you are in the agricultural or holticultural business already and just want to get a confirmation of your competence.

Green card is useable for:
Pupils and employees. Employers, headmasters and teachers get a confirmation of the practical competence on the employees and the pupils.

The green card certifies that the holder has acquired the set standards in animal husbandry (milk or pigs) or in crop production or horticulture production.

There are three levels:
Level 1 - basic – do things right
With certain instruction

Level 2 - specialist, supervisor

Level 3 – farm manager

The examination can take place at a school or on a farm approved by the Swedish Vocational Board of Agriculture and Gardening.

Level 1 is divided into three parts;

  1. Practical work ( ten stations)
  2. Discussion (oral)
  3. Theoretical test (1 hour)

It is possible to have approval in one part and not in the other. To get the Green card you must have approval in all parts. If not you can have a new test later on.

The examiners* shall be two persons, can be a teacher or an instructor at an Agricultural College and one of them shall be a farmer (or have similar experiences).

Here follows an example of the practical part for Green Card Pig (level 1)

  6. Pigs for slaughter
  7. Feeding and feeding- requirements

*) Some points for example calving; If there is no cow calving on the day of the examination then it is possible to discuss that instead.

An important part of the judgement is to notice if the pupil is observant.  For example shall the pupil discover if there is anything wrong with the behaviour of the animals, any kind of injures sickness or if they are in heat. The pupil also has to be observant on the working conditions and risks.

Other important thing is how the pupil behaves together with the animals and also how the pupil behave with other people.

Here follows an example of the practical part for Green Card arable farming/field-machinery (level 1)

All stations are compulsory
